The pressure will increase on Croatia this weekend, as their opportunity to finish in the top two spots in Group D will hinge on the next seven days. The World Cup semi-finalists will desperately need maximum points when they travel to Latvia to keep alive their hopes of a top-two finish in Group D.
It hasn’t been the most straightforward qualification campaign for Croatia, as they would have been expected to comfortably sit in the top two positions at this stage. However, they face a battle to finish in the top two in Group D after winning just three of their six matches. They currently sit third in the standings after falling to defeat against Wales in their previous match.
But, they will still likely be favoured to finish in the required positions, as they have two winnable matches to round off the Group D fixtures. Victories in both will see them finish the group stage on 16 points, which could be enough with Turkey and Wales squaring off in the final match in this stage next week. However, a response will be needed after they have lost each of their previous two.
Latvia will be massive outsiders in the betting this weekend, as their place in the major tournament next year has already disappeared. They look set to finish bottom of the Group D standings, as they have landed just a single victory from their seven internationals. Scoring goals has been a continued issue, as they have netted just five times.
However, they have also struggled at the opposite end of the pitch, as they boast the worst defensive record in Group D after allowing 17 goals across their seven matches. They come into this match after losing four of their previous five. Their most recent defeat was a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Turkey.
Croatia boasts a 100% record against Latvia, as they have won all five previous encounters between the sides without conceding a goal. The most recent meeting between the sides saw Croatia run out 5-0 winners in September.
This appears to be a good fixture for Croatia to get back on track in qualification. We don’t expect them to encounter many issues against their rivals, and we fully expect them to land a comfortable success by at least a two-goal winning margin.
