The top flight in Spain returned after a pause for the international break. During that break, the national side cemented their place in next summer’s European Championships, but there was a few of that squad that were brought back down to earth over the weekend.
Zinedine Zidane’s side were finally beaten for the first time this season as they were humbled by an unfancied Mallorca side. Madrid went behind inside the opening ten minutes when Lago Junior was given too much space in the area. He calmly slotted past the helpless Madrid keeper. Things got even worse for the travelling side when they were sent down to ten men when Alvaro Odriozola was sent off with 15 minutes remaining.
Barcelona leap-frogged their great rivals with a comfortable away day success against Eibar on Saturday afternoon. It was the first time that all of their three superstars got on the score sheet this season. Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring, before Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez added two more in the second period.
Atletico’s inconsistent start to the new season continued as they were held against a resolute Valencia side. Diego Costa put the home side ahead after 36 minutes, but Valencia struck back in the final ten minutes when Daniel Parejo scored a brilliant goal. Lee Kang-In saw red late in the game for the visitors, but Valencia were good value for a point away from home.
Real Sociedad continued with their excellent start to the new season to come back from one down to seal all three points. Lorenzo Garcia put the visitors ahead after 12 minutes but Javi Garcia and Willian Jose turned the game on its head before the break. Portu added a third 15 minutes into the second half as Sociedad remain in fourth.
