Action in Group H in EURO qualification continues on Friday, as Kazakhstan look to keep alive their dreams of reaching the major tournament. The nation will face a likely straightforward encounter against minnows San Marino at home.
The penultimate round of matches in Group H takes place on Friday, as Kazakhstan look to keep alive their hopes of reaching the major tournament. The nation haven’t managed to gain qualification to the EUROs, or any major tournament as a single nation, with their only previous appearances coming as part of the Soviet Union between 1960 and 1992.
However, they will have two further attempts in their bid to finish in the top two, but only victories in both of their remaining matches will give them a chance of finishing in the qualification places. But, they do have the added benefit of a playoff if they fall short. Kazakhstan have won five of their eight matches in Group H, and they come into this showdown after winning five of their last seven. Their most recent win was a fine 2-1 success away from home against Finland.
As expected, San Marino’s chances of reaching the EUROs have already come to an end. The minnows sit bottom of the Group H standings after losing each of their eight matches in the qualification campaign. However, they would have considered their goal in a recent defeat against Denmark to be as significant as a victory.
However, the eight defeats that they have suffered in qualification means that they have now gone 76 EURO qualifiers without picking up a victory. In fact, they have picked up just a single point over the same period. That looks like a trend that is unlikely to change this week.
Kazakhstan have landed victories in all three internationals against San Marino. That includes a 3-0 victory in the most recent encounter in June. Overall, Kazakhstan have netted ten goals across the three matches against their rivals, and they have conceded just once.
All the pressure will be on Kazakhstan this week, as they look to keep alive their dreams of reaching the EUROs. We don’t expect them to encounter many issues against San Marino, with the preference being for a straightforward 4-0 win for the home since in Group H.
