Two of the standout teams in the Europa League this season will lock horns on Thursday. It will be the first leg of the quarterfinal showdown between Juventus and Sporting Lisbon, with the Old Lady having home advantage for the first leg.
Juventus may still see the Europa League as their best route back into the Champions League, as they face an uphill battle to qualify for the premier European competition based on their Serie A performances this term. The Old Lady have been extremely professional since dropping into the Europa League, as they have won three of the four matches that they have played.
In the previous round, they edged to a home 1-0 win over Freiburg, before booking their spot in the quarterfinal stage with a 2-0 away win. Juventus has kept clean sheets in each of their previous three matches in the Europa League, with the only goal that they have conceded coming in their first leg showdown with Nantes in the middle of February.
Sporting Lisbon produced one of the biggest shocks in the Europa League this season in the previous round, as they managed to eliminate Arsenal. After sharing four goals in the opening leg, Sporting scored a dramatic equaliser in the return fixture to force the additional period.
Away from home, the Portuguese side has been excellent this season, as they have lost just once in six away matches across the Champions League and Europa League. They are also on a three-game unbeaten run on their travels. They will be looking to go four away games without defeat for the first time since February 2019 on Thursday.
This will be the third meeting between these sides. This exact fixture in the 2017-18 Champions League was won 2-1 by Juventus, before the sides played out a 1-1 draw in the return fixture. Sporting is also winless in their last 15 matches away from home against Italian opposition. Eleven of those matches have ended in defeat.
Sporting has already demonstrated their high levels of performance across the Champions League and Europa League this term. However, this will be a huge challenge at the Allianz Stadium. We expect Juventus to take a first leg advantage, but we could see them achieving that feat by only a one-goal margin.
