The Women’s World Cup action continues on Monday, as Italy and Argentina lock horns in their first fixtures in Group G. Both sides will be desperate to get off the mark with maximum points ahead of showdowns with Sweden.
This promises to be an exciting match in the opening round of fixtures in Group G. Italy appear back on an upward trajectory at present, as they managed to qualify for a first World Cup in 20 years back in 2019. They impressed at the major tournament to reach the quarterfinals after winning three of their five matches. However, they weren’t able to build on that showing at the EUROs last summer, as they were eliminated in the group stage after failing to win in three matches.
The Italians endured a poor run of results at the start of the year, as they were beaten by Belgium and England. However, they have responded well to win three of their last four. Their final warm-up match was played on July 14, as they landed a hard-fought 1-0 win over New Zealand in Auckland.
Argentina have struggled in recent editions of the World Cup, as they have failed to progress through to the knockout round in their previous three appearances. They were poor at the 2019 World Cup, as they failed to win in three matches. That record means that they are still without a win in nine matches at the World Cup.
Argentina comes into the tournament after a decent showing at last summer’s Copa America Femenina, as they concluded the competition in third place. Their form this year has been solid, as they have gone six matches without defeat. They have won each of their last two warm-up matches before the World Cup, which includes a 4-0 win over Peru on July 14.
This will only be the second meeting between the sides. Italy were winners in the only previous encounter between the nations, as they landed a 4-0 win in a friendly international.
Argentina should come into the tournament in good mood after a run of positive performances in their warm-up matches. However, Italy clearly has the better quality across the field, which means that we will be siding with the European nation picking up maximum points in this Group G opener.
