The final weekend of the U20 World Cup is staged this coming weekend, and all attention before the final between Uruguay and Italy will be on the match for third place. South Korea and Israel will be looking to end their tournaments on a high point after defeats in the semi-finals.
It should be a fascinating match between the two sides this weekend, as both will be looking to achieve one of their best results in the tournament. South Korea would have been full of confidence coming into the competition this year, as they finished as runners-up back in 2019. However, their dreams of reaching a second straight final were ended at the hands of Italy on Thursday.
South Korea played a strong defensive system in that fixture, but they were fortunate to go into the break level following Seung-Won Lee’s penalty in the 23rd minute. However, their resistance was eventually breached with just four minutes of the 90 remaining, as the Italians wrapped up a memorable win in the dying stages.
Israel will already achieve their best ever finish at the U20 World Cup, as they have never previously finished in the top four in the tournament’s history. They did excellently well to make it out of a competitive group stage in the opening round, as they won one of their three matches to finish ahead of Japan and Senegal.
Their performance levels reached new heights in the knockout rounds, as they landed a 1-0 win over Uzbekistan, before famously defeating Brazil on penalties in the quarterfinals of the competition. However, their dream run was brought to an end on Thursday, as they lost 1-0 against Uruguay.
This will be a tenth meeting between the sides in an international fixture, but the first at U20 level. Israel has beaten South Korea on just one previous occasion, with the Asian side picking up five wins over the same space of time. However, it will be a first meeting between these nations of any description since 1996.
Israel has surpassed all expectations to reach this stage of the competition, but they may struggle to breakdown a resolute South Korean defence this weekend. Therefore, a chance is taken on South Korea to finish third overall.
