Ireland’s journey at the Women’s World Cup has already come to an end after their recent defeat, but Nigeria could make history in their final Group B match, as a victory would secure their spot in the round of 16 for just the third time in their history.
There will be big stakes on the line in Brisbane on matchday three in Group B, as Nigeria will need something out of their clash against Ireland to book their place in the round of 16. The African nation surprised everybody in their second match, as they produced one of their best ever World Cup displays to land a 3-2 win over Australia. Uschenna Kanu scored the equalising goal on the stroke of half time, before Osinachi Ohaele and Asisat Oshoala scored goals in the second period to help secure a 3-2 win.
It was the first time in Nigeria’s history that they have come from a goal behind to win a match, ending a streak that stood at 23 matches. Oshoala also made history, as she became the first Nigerian player to score in three editions of the World Cup.
The dream is over for Ireland, as their run in the World Cup came to an end on matchday two following defeat against Canada. However, the nation will be able to hold their head high after two very impressive displays against highly-ranked opponents. Ireland were excellent for 45 minutes against Canada, with their first ever goal at the tournament being scored by the impressive Katie McCabe.
However, two goals for Canada secured a win for their Group B rivals. Ireland will have a role to play in how the group shapes up, as a win for them would open the door for Australia to qualify. However, a defeat or loss will leave the advantage firmly with Nigeria.
This is the first meeting between Ireland and Nigeria at the World Cup. However, the African nation has a poor recent record against European opposition, as they are winless in their last eight matches.
Ireland deserves to leave the World Cup with at least a victory behind them, such has been the impressive nature of their performances. However, the Nigeria’s momentum looks too challenging to overlook, so we will side with the African nation gaining the win they need to reach the round of 16.
