A massive match in EURO qualification for Greece takes place on Friday, as the visitors to Dublin will be looking for a huge three points which could move them into the two qualifying spots. Ireland are on the brink of elimination, as they sit six points off the top two places.
With just three rounds of matches remaining in qualification, Greece remain in the hunt for a place in the major tournament next summer. The nation has missed out qualification in each of the previous two editions of the tournament, but the 2004 EURO champions have the added benefit of a playoff to reach Germany if they require it.
Greece currently sits third in the Group B standings, but they are level on points with the Netherlands. The Greek side have won three of their five matches in the group, and they have scored a creditable ten goals. They should be full of confidence coming into this match after bouncing back to winning ways with a fine 5-0 win over Gibraltar last month. However, tough tasks remain in store for Greece with the qualification campaign rounding off against the Netherlands and France.
Ireland will already be looking ahead to hosting matches at the 2028 EUROs, after it was announced that the nation will be hosting the competition alongside England. However, their dreams of reaching the 2024 tournament appear incredibly slim at this stage, as they sit six points adrift of the top two places in the group standings.
Ireland have struggled for victories throughout their campaign, as they have landed just one win in five matches. Four defeats have already been suffered, which includes two losses against France, and a recent defeat against the Netherlands.
Ireland have never previously recorded a victory against Greece in four attempts. Greece have won three times against the Irish, including a 2-1 success in the reverse clash in this qualification campaign. Ireland’s only positive result against Greece was a 0-0 draw in November 2002.
Ireland’s record in this fixture is incredibly poor, and that is a trend that is very challenging to overlook ahead of this showdown on Friday. Therefore, the preference is for an away win in Dublin, with Greece keeping their qualification dreams alive at the Aviva Stadium.
