Last season’s Champions League runners-up will be looking to continue their fine record in the competition this term. Inter Milan are in a strong position as we enter the halfway stage, as they sit second in the standings after winning once in their opening two matches. However, they face an interesting showdown with RB Salzburg on Tuesday.
It remains a tall order, but Inter Milan will be looking to go one step further than they did last term and win the Champions League this season. The Italian giants have put themselves into an excellent position to battle for top spot in the standings, as they have won once in their opening two matches, leaving them level on points with Real Sociedad.
However, Salzburg are also in the hunt for a place in the next round of the Champions League this season, as they sit just a point behind Inter Milan at this early stage. The Austrian side picked up a much-needed win on the opening night against Benfica, before falling to defeat against Sociedad on matchday two.
Salzburg made history on matchday one, as they landed a famous win over Benfica in Portugal. However, they have never previously landed back-to-back wins on the road in the competition, and they haven’t ever won more than one away match in a single edition of the Champions League in their history.
Inter Milan’s home record in the competition has been excellent, as they have gone six without defeat in the Champions League. Over that period, they have recorded five victories, and have kept clean sheets in all wins. They haven’t enjoyed a longer unbeaten run in the competition since going ten without a defeat at home in November 2010.
These two sides have only met on two previous occasions, with those coming in the UEFA Cup final in 1994. Inter won both legs on that occasion by 1-0 scorelines. The Italian giants have also won eight of their last nine against Austrian opposition.
Inter’s home record in the Champions League in recent seasons has been exceptionally strong, and that looks like a trend that is challenging to overlook this week. Therefore, we will be siding with the home side landing maximum points to move to the top of the standings for a few hours at least this week.
