Inter Milan were handed their first setback of the domestic season in midweek after crashing out of the Coppa Italia at the hands of Bologna. However, they will be hoping to extend their league advantage with a victory over Lecce this weekend.
It has been an impressive start to the Serie A campaign for Inter Milan, and they are already the clear favourites to win the top-flight title. Inter currently holds a four-point advantage over Juventus at the summit after winning 13 of their opening 16 matches, and they come into the final round of fixtures before Christmas after winning each of their previous three in the league.
Lecce have been a very challenging side to beat in Italy this season, evident by the fact that they have suffered just four losses in the top division. However, draws are an issue for the visitors after being held in four of their last five. Overall, they have already played out eight draws in Serie A in 2023-24, which is the second-most in the competition.
Inter’s start to the season after winning 13 of their 16 matches is statistically their second-best in history. They have only eclipsed that number of wins on one previous occasion; in 2006-07. On that occasion, they would also land victory in the 17th round of matches in the Italian top flight.
Lecce made a very bright start to the season after winning three of their opening five, and could unbeaten across those fixtures. However, since that start, they have picked up just a single win from their last eleven, with six of their matches ending in draws. But, they do come into the weekend after recording victory last weekend, meaning that they could win consecutive games for the first time since January 2023.
Lecce has a really poor record in this fixture, winning just once in their last 14 against Inter in the league. Their only success was a 1-0 win in January 2012. Meanwhile, Inter have an astounding record in matches between the sides at the San Siro after winning 16 of their last 17 in the league against Lecce.
The dominant record at the San Siro of Inter against Lecce is almost impossible to ignore when assessing the most likely outcome this weekend. Therefore, the preference is for the league leaders to extend their advantage by claiming the victory.
