Inter Milan kick off their 2023-24 campaign at the San Siro this Saturday, as they play host to Monza. The Italian hosts will be chasing a renewed effort domestically this term after falling short in defending their title last term.
The 2022-23 season ultimately ended in disappointment for Inter Milan, as they fell short in the Champions League final against Manchester City. They also allowed their standards to drop domestically, as they finished third in the Serie A standings. Overall, they finished 18 points behind Napoli in the race for the title, and a response will be expected this term in the top flight.
There will be a new look to the team this term, with Milan Skriniar, Edin Dzeko, and Andre Onana among the big name departures. However, the latter has been replaced by Yann Sommer, with Kristjan Asllani and Juan Cuadrado adding quality in the final third of the field. Inter enjoyed a fine pre-season campaign, as they won five of their six matches.
Monza made an excellent start to life in Serie A last term, as they narrowly missed out on a place in the top half of the standings. The Italian side finished eleventh overall after winning 14 of their 38 matches. They will have questions to answer defensively this term, as they allowed 52 goals throughout last season, which was among the worst records in the division.
Once again, survival will be the key for Monza this term, before they can dream about pushing up the league standings. The Italian side has enjoyed a progressive pre-season, as they went unbeaten in their six friendly matches. That includes draws against both Everton and AC Milan. Three former Inter stars will make their debuts for Monza this weekend, including Roberto Gagliardini, Valentin Carboni, and Danil D’Ambrosio.
Inter Milan failed to win either of the matches between these sides last season. Monza landed a famous 1-0 win at the San Siro in this exact fixture last term, with that win being recorded in April. The other meeting last season ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw.
This should be an interesting opening day clash between these two sides on Saturday. However, there will be greater pressure on Inter to kick off their season with a win. Therefore, we will be siding with a home win on Saturday.
