Luxembourg have been one of the stories in qualification to this point, and they could continue their challenge for a place in the major tournament next summer with maximum points this weekend. Iceland have a huge challenge on their hands, as they sit seven points adrift of the top two with four matches remaining.
It has been a very impressive qualifying campaign for Luxembourg this year, and their dreams of reaching the EUROs remain in tact with four matches remaining. The nation have never previously managed to gain qualification to the EUROs, and before this year, they had won a maximum of one match during the qualifying campaign in each of the last six editions.
However, they have already recorded a joint-best tally of three victories from their six internationals in Group J this year, and they are just three points adrift of second-placed Slovakia. But, they will need to be near perfect over their remaining matches, as they have suffered two defeats, and have conceded the second-most goals in the group stage.
Iceland defied all expectations to reach the last eight at EURO 2016, but they have failed to reach the same heights since that feat, most recently missing out on qualification for the 2022 World Cup. It looks unlikely that they will be making a return to the EUROs next year, as they already sit seven points off the top two spots in Group J.
Their form throughout this qualification campaign has been concerning, as they have landed just two wins from their six matches. However, they did build momentum with a fine 1-0 win against Bosnia in the recent international break, which ended a run of three straight defeats.
Iceland have won four of their eight international clashes against Luxembourg, and they were unbeaten against their rivals between 1976 and 2023. However, the most recent international saw Luxembourg land a first ever win over Iceland, as the visitors landing a 3-1 win in September.
Luxembourg’s recent win over Iceland was a historic victory for the nation, and a success on the road this weekend would see them remain in contention to achieve a first ever qualification to the EUROs. However, it will be a tougher challenge on the road against their rivals, meaning a draw could be a likely outcome.
