They defied expectations in 2016 by reaching the round of 16, but they exited the tournament at the group stage in 2020. That record sees them top the Group G standings coming into the final two rounds of matches, and they require just one more win to secure a top-two finish. Montenegro aren’t yet completely out of the hunt for a finish in the top two spots in the standings, but they require victories in each of their remaining two matches to stand any chance. However, their hopes of reaching the EUROs next year do appear to be incredibly slim. 

The nation haven’t yet achieved qualification as an independent nation, with their previous appearances coming as part of Serbia and Yugoslavia. Montenegro will at least take confidence from the fact that they have improved their record in qualifying after failing to win a single match in the qualification campaign to reach EURO 2020.
