A wide open Group G hosts a competitive fixture on Monday, as Hungary will have home advantage when they clash with Bulgaria. Both nations will believe that they have the quality to reach the tournament finals, but this fixture could tell us more about both teams chances.
Hungary appears to be a nation back on the rise in the European game, and they will be targeting a third straight appearance at the EUROs for the first time in their history. They enjoyed an excellent qualifying campaign for the previous edition of the tournament, as they won six of their ten matches, before gaining entry through the playoff.
However, it has been in the Nations League where Hungary have shown that they are an emerging nation. They have quickly gained promotion to Division A, and in their first campaign last year they finished second in a very testing group. In that phase they picked up three wins, including victories at home and away against England. Hungary also ended the year on a high with a 2-1 win at home against Greece.
Bulgaria hasn’t reached the EUROs since 2004 where they were eliminated at the group stage after losing all three matches. Since then, they have really struggled in qualification, as they have won just five matches across their previous three qualifying campaigns. Their worst recent performance came when attempting to reach EURO 2020, as they lost seven of their nine matches.
They come into this international break after a disappointing performance in the Nations League, as they lost three of their six matches in Division C. However, recent form could be a big boost to their chances on Monday, as they have gone six without defeat, but three matches over that run have ended in draws.
Hungary has claimed 13 victories from the previous 26 international meetings between the sides. Over the same period, Bulgaria has picked up seven wins, while there have been six draws. The most recent meeting came in October 2020, as Hungary claimed a 3-1 win.
Hungary appears to be a side more than capable of qualifying from this group as winners. We could see them making a bold statement in front of their home fans on Monday evening, and we could see them registering a 3-0 win.
