Freiburg was one of the surprise packages in the Bundesliga last term, as they achieved a memorable finish in fifth. They will be looking to build on that strong showing this term, beginning with a trip to Hoffenheim.
Freiburg out-performed all expectations last season, as they finished in a European place after securing fifth in the standings. This term will come with new challenges, as they will be fighting on numerous fronts, but Christian Streich will be keen to ensure that their league performance levels don’t drop due to their Europa League commitments.
They will certainly be slightly weakened following the departures of Mark Flekken and Kevin Schade to Brentford, while Nils Petersen’s experience will be a loss following his retirement. Freiburg haven’t brought many new faces in, as their only additions have been Junior Adamu and Florian Muller from RB Salzburg and Stuttgart, respectively. They warmed up for the new season with a comfortable 2-0 win in the DFB Pokal on Sunday, with Christian Gunter and Roland Sallai scoring in a straightforward success against Oberachern.
Hoffenheim were one of a number of teams that underperformed in the Bundesliga last term, as they could only finish 12th in the overall standings. However, they will be looking to force their way back into the top half of the Bundesliga this term, and potentially fight for a European spot.
Pellegrino Matarazzo will take charge of the team for his first full season at the club, and he has been backed throughout the summer window with the arrivals of Julian Justvan, Florian Grillitsch, and Wout Weghorst. They kicked off their domestic campaign with a fine display in the DFB Pokal on Monday, beating Lubeck 4-1 on the road. Andrej Kramaric scored twice in that success.
Freiburg is unbeaten in their previous three matches against Hoffenheim, which includes a 4-3 win on the road in April 2022. Hoffenheim is without a home win in four matches against Freiburg since a 3-1 success in September 2018.
Hoffenheim’s poor home record against Freiburg is pretty challenging to overlook coming into this weekend. The visitors enjoyed a fine campaign last term, and we expect them to get their new season underway with a victory on the road.
