Hamburg were cruelly denied automatic promotion on the final day of the 2. Bundesliga season, and the after-effects of that disappointment were clearly evident on Thursday. They have given themselves a mountain to climb ahead of the return match against Stuttgart on Monday evening.

Bundesliga Playoff Preview

Hamburg’s long stay in the second tier in Germany looks set to continue, unless they can pull out a miraculous recovery in the second clash between the sides in the playoffs on Monday. The German giants were hammered 3-0 on the road in the first clash between the sides on Thursday, with Stuttgart taking the lead in the match after just a minute through Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Hamburg settled down after that early setback, and had chances to go into the break level. However, they were made to pay for those missed opportunities inside the opening ten minutes of the second half. Stuttgart added a second after 51 minutes through Josha Vagnoman, before a third was added just three minutes later by Serhou Guirassy.

In truth, credit must also be given to Stuttgart, as they produced a performance that we have seen very little of throughout the Bundesliga campaign. They were dominant in the final third when the chances presented themselves, and they now have an excellent chance of consolidating their place in next season’s Bundesliga.

Things got even worse for Hamburg in the final 20 minutes, as they were reduced to ten men when Anssi Suhonen was sent off. The heavy defeat means that Hamburg must win by a 3-0 scoreline on Monday to force extra time, but they have won by a three-goal margin in just two home fixtures throughout the 2022-23 campaign.

Stuttgart has now won each of their last three matches against Hamburg. However, Hamburg does have a fine home record in this fixture, as they have lost just once in four previous home matches against Stuttgart. Their chances are slightly improved based on the fact that they were 6-2 winners in this exact fixture back in October 2019.
