The first game of the La Liga weekend takes place on Friday evening, as Girona welcome Real Valladolid. Both teams have started the new season in steady form, but a second win of the season for either could be crucial at this early stage to build momentum.
Both Girona and Real Valladolid were among the favourites for the drop at the beginning of the season. But, they will be fairly happy with the starts to the season that they have made to this point, as both have recorded victories at this early stage.
Girona come into this fixture sitting 12th in the league standings, as they have won once and drawn once from their opening four games. However, they will likely need to add more cutting edge to their attacks, as they have found the net on just four occasions at this early stage. Girona bounced back from defeat in their most recent fixture, as they played out a 1-1 draw against Mallorca. Both goals in the game were scored very late, with Girona saving a point with virtually the last kick of the game, as Samuel Saiz rattled home his penalty in the 92nd minute.
Real Valladolid are lower than Girona in the current standings, as they come into this upcoming round of fixtures in La Liga sitting 16th in the standings. However, they have shown better performances in recent weeks, as they have lost once in their previous three games.
A first win of the new season was recorded in their latest fixture, as Valladolid picked up a much-needed first three points of the campaign against Almeria. The win was secured in the 93rd minute, as Shon Weissman broke the deadlock with virtually the last kick of the game.
This will only be the third top flight meeting between the sides in the past ten years. Last season, the sides met on two occasions in the Segunda Division, with Girona winning this exact fixture 1-0. The meeting later in the season ended in a 2-2 draw.
It is pretty hard to separate these two sides as they are both very evenly matched. Therefore, we could see the most likely result on Friday being a draw. It may be a low-scoring fixture, which means 1-1 may be the most likely outcome.
