Girona would have been delighted with their start to the new season after picking up a hard-fought point on the road. However, they will be chasing a victory for the first time this season on Sunday against Getafe.
Girona could be one of the dark horse contenders for a place in Europe this term, as they look to build on an impressive campaign in 2022-23. The Spanish club finished tenth in the overall standings last term, after winning 13 of their 38 matches. They would have been delighted with their first outing of the new season last weekend, as they picked up a deserved point at Real Sociedad.
Girona fell behind early in that opening match, but they kept plugging away deep into the second half trying to create chances. Eventually, they finally managed to find the breakthrough, as Artem Dovbyk scored the equalising goal with just 18 minutes remaining. This looks like a more straightforward assignment for them this weekend, as they come up against a side that struggled at the bottom end of the standings last term.
Last season was one that Getafe will be looking to forget about quickly, as they struggled in their battle to avoid relegation. Eventually, they were able to pick up the desired amount of points, as they concluded the campaign in 15th place overall. Getafe lost a staggering 16 matches last term, and that will be a huge concern ahead of this campaign.
However, they made a pleasing start to the new season, as they battled to a 0-0 draw against Barcelona on matchday one. Both sides saw players sent off in the draw, but Getafe could have snatched the win, as they had a number of clear scoring opportunities to land a stunning opening day victory over the reigning champions.
Getafe landed a 3-2 win in the previous clash between the sides. Interestingly, there hasn’t been an away win in this fixture in six La Liga showdowns. Over that period, Girona has recorded two wins, which includes a 2-1 win last season.
The home record of teams in this fixture is an interesting trend to follow. Girona were impressive in their opening match, and we could see them landing victory in their first home match of the season by a 3-1 scoreline.
