There will be pressure on Girona for the first time this season on Sunday, as the Spanish league leaders look to fight off Real Madrid to ensure that they keep hold of top spot. Sevilla will be the visitors, as they look to end a miserable run of results on the field.
For the first time this season, Girona find themselves under pressure coming into a round of matches in La Liga. The Spanish side remain top of the standings, but their advantage is just one point, having played a game more than Real Madrid. The Spanish side have still been in excellent form this term, losing just once in 20 matches in 2023-24.
However, their form has taken a slight hit in recent weeks after playing out two draws in their last three matches. Despite that, they are the highest scorers in the competition, and they will need to rediscover that form to maintain their advantage at the top of the standings. Girona were really disappointed with their result last weekend, as they couldn’t find a way through against Almeria.
Pressure will also be on the visitors this weekend, as Sevilla continue to find themselves at the wrong end of the league standings. The Spanish club are just a point clear of the relegation places coming into this weekend, and only the bottom three sides in the competition have picked up fewer victories so far this term.
Sevilla also don’t have much confidence ahead of this showdown after suffering losses in each of their last three matches. Once again, they were disappointing last weekend, playing out a 3-2 defeat at home against Alaves. A big effort will be required to maintain their top flight status in the second half of the season.
The home side have dominated the recent clashes between the two sides, winning each of the last four. Sevilla’s most recent success against Girona was recorded back in December 2018. Girona landed a 2-1 win in the first meeting between the teams this term.
Despite Girona struggling for victories in recent weeks, they appear hard to overlook when assessing the most likely winner in this fixture on Sunday. They boast a dominant record in previous encounters, and we could envisage them claiming a 2-0 home win to get back on track.
