The champions of Spain kick off their 2023-24 campaign on Sunday, as they travel to Getafe. Barcelona will be looking to get off to the best possible start, as they bid to retain the prize that they won in 2022-23.
The 2022-23 campaign was a huge success for Barcelona, as they finally made their way back to the top of Spanish football. They were excellent throughout the season, as they won 28 of their 38 matches, and conceded just 20 goals. The target remains the same for Xavi and his players this term, as they look to retain the top prize.
Barcelona have added strength in depth throughout pre-season, as the signings of Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez on free transfers could prove to be masterstrokes. Meanwhile, the club also brought in Oriol Romeu, who will help to fill the void left following Sergio Busquets’ departure to the MLS. Xavi will also be looking for more success on the continent this term, as Barcelona crashed out at the group stage in the Champions League last term.
Getafe will be happy to put the 2022-23 season behind them, as they faced a nervy wait to secure their spot in the top-flight. They finished just two points above the relegation places, and were among the lowest scorers in the league last term after netting just 34 goals in 38 matches. That is an area where they must improve if they are to move up the league standings.
Jose Bordalas remains in charge of the team after masterminding their route to safety at the conclusion of last term. There will certainly be a fresh feel about the team this term, as they have brought in five new players. The standout additions have been the signings of Portu and Omas Alderete from Real Sociedad and Hertha Berlin, respectively.
Barcelona has an excellent overall record in this fixture, as they have won 22 of their previous 29 against Getafe. However, two of the last three have ended in draws, and Barcelona are without an away win against Getafe in their previous three visits.
This looks like a solid opening day fixture for Barcelona. However, the reigning champions look in good condition ahead of the start of the new campaign, and we fully expect them to get off to a winning start away from home.
