One of the most successful teams in Women’s World Cup history will open their Group H campaign on Monday, as Germany begin their hunt for a third triumph in Melbourne against Morocco.
Germany will be looking to continue their dominant record at the Women’s World Cup this summer, as they chase a third world championship. The nation previously won back-to-back tournaments in 2003 and 2007, but they have failed to make the final since the second of those victories. They will have a point to prove this summer after failing to make it past the quarterfinal stage at the World Cup in 2019.
Germany also fell at the same hurdle at the EUROs last summer, which ended their six-tournament dominance on the continental tournament. They have looked anything put unbeatable throughout their warm-up matches this year, as they have landed just two wins from five internationals. They will have to bounce back to winning ways in this opening match, as they were stunned by Zambia in their final warm-up match on July 7.
Morocco will make their World Cup debut this year, and there are few sterner tests than a showdown against Germany. The African nation should come into this tournament in good form, as they achieved a historic feat last year by reaching the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. However, they have struggled for consistency in their warm-up matches.
Morocco has failed to score in each of their last five internationals, which includes defeats against Jamaica, Romania, and the Czech Republic since the start of April. They were also unable to find a goal in 0-0 draws against Italy and Switzerland. Therefore, this looks like an extremely difficult challenge to see them getting anything from this opening match.
This will be a first meeting between Germany and Morocco. The two nations have never previously clashed in an international friendly, nor a World Cup fixture.
Morocco’s issues have been evident throughout their warm-up matches, as they have been unable to put together any run of wins. Therefore, this looks to be a near-impossible challenge against Germany. If the European nation is at their best, we expect Germany to win, and that could come by a 6-0 scoreline.
