The race for the final spots at this summer’s European Championships comes to its conclusion this week, as the important qualifying playoffs are staged. Two nations that will be aiming for an unlikely route into the major tournament will be Georgia and Luxembourg.
It could be a significant seven days or so for both Georgia and Luxembourg, as they both battle for an unlikely route to the Euros. Georgia could be among the likely contenders to come out of this Path C route after enjoying a steady qualifying campaign.
The nation comes into this international after finishing fourth in their Group A standings. However, they landed two wins during that campaign, and scored an impressive 12 goals. Their form throughout last year was relatively solid, with their only defeat in their last four coming away from home against Spain. This showdown with Luxembourg is a much more straightforward proposition.
Luxembourg will be chasing history over the next week, as they will be looking to earn qualification to a major tournament for the first time in their history. The nation enjoyed a fine group campaign, winning five of their ten matches in Group J. Furthermore, they suffered just three defeats, which was the third-fewest in the group behind Portugal and Slovakia.
They should come into this match in good confidence after winning each of their last two internationals. Meanwhile, they have suffered just two defeats in their last eight matches. That is a huge plus to their chances, and a victory over Georgia on Thursday could leave them within touching distance of a record-setting achievement.
This will only be the fifth international meeting between these nations. Georgia have won two of the last four, but the most recent clash was won 1-0 by Luxembourg in June 2018. Interestingly, this will be the first ever competitive meeting between these nations, with each of the last four being friendlies.
There is little to separate these two nations, and both come into this international full of confidence that they will progress through to the next round of the playoffs. However, we will be prepared to side with Luxembourg to achieve that feat, as they have been much more competitive against the best nations in the world over the last 12 months.
