Napoli will be looking to get back on track this weekend after suffering a first defeat of the season before the international break. Genoa will have home advantage, but can they cause a shock result against the Italian champions?
Napoli will be hoping to put their recent setback behind them when they return to domestic action following the international break on Saturday. The Italian champions suffered a rare top-flight defeat in 2023 before the break, and they will need to get back on track to re-establish their authority at the top of the Italian standings.
Before that loss, Napoli had landed back-to-back wins, and were comfortably at the top of the standings. But, the unbeaten start to the new campaign came to an end at the hands of Lazio in Naples. It was a shock defeat given how both sides had started the season. Napoli’s goal in the defeat was netted by Piotr Zielinski. It was an excellent counter-attacking performance by the visitors, and that could be a game plan adopted by Genoa this weekend.
Genoa will have mixed feelings about their start to the new season, as they have won once in their opening three matches. However, the fact that they have suffered two defeats would be a concern at this early stage, as they sit 14th in the Serie A standings.
A second defeat of the campaign was inflicted on the road before the international break, as they were edged out by Torino. In truth, Genoa looked to have done enough to hang on for a point in that fixture, but Torino stole the points with virtually the last kick of the game in the 94th minute.
Napoli boasts an extremely dominant record in this fixture, as they have won four of the previous five clashes between the sides. However, Genoa will take confidence from the fact that they picked up maximum points in this fixture in February 2021. But, that remains their only win in the last 20 Serie A meetings between the sides.
Napoli will be in desperate search of a return to winning ways this weekend, and they appear challenging to oppose based on their dominant head-to-head record in this fixture. We expect this to be a closer encounter than the odds suggest, with Napoli landing maximum points by a single goal.
