Genoa kick off their return to the Italian top-flight on Saturday, as they welcome Fiorentina. The visitors will be looking to improve on their performances last term, and will have European football to contend with this term.
Genoa would have been delighted with their performances last term, as they made an instant return to Serie A after suffering relegation. There would have been huge concern surrounding their chances of achieving that feat after suffering a first relegation since 2007 at the end of the 2021-22 season.
However, they were excellent throughout their promotion-winning campaign, as they won 21 of their 38 matches. Overall, they suffered just six defeats in the second tier, and boasted one of the best defensive records after allowing just 28 goals. They kicked off their domestic campaign with a nervy display in front of their home fans last weekend, as they secured a dramatic 4-3 win over Modena in the opening round of the Coppa Italia.
Last season was a hugely successful campaign for Fiorentina, as they achieved an excellent finish in eighth place in the standings. The Italian side also secured a spot in the Europa Conference League playoff round after Juventus’ exclusion from UEFA competitions. Fiorentina won 15 of their 38 matches last term, and they suffered just 12 defeats.
The Italian side have added quality to the team over the summer, as they prepare to battle in numerous competitions. Arthur’s arrival on a loan deal from Juventus could be a smart addition if he is able to get back to his best level. Meanwhile, the additions of Yerry Mina and Fabiano Parisi add quality to the backline for the Italian side,
Fiorentina have won ten of their previous 27 matches against Genoa. That includes victories in each of the previous two encounters in Serie A. The previous meeting took place in January 2022, with Fiorentina landing a huge 6-0 home win over their rivals.
This is a challenging match to start life back in Serie A for Genoa. Fiorentina have dominated the previous encounters between the sides, and we fully expect them to continue that trend in the Italian top-flight on Saturday. Therefore, we will be siding with the visitors to land a comfortable 2-0 win on the road this weekend.
