Champions League action resumes in Group A on Tuesday, as Bayern Munich bid to stretch their advantage at the top of the standings. However, they will come up against Galatasaray, who landed success on matchday two at Old Trafford.
It has been another strong start to the Champions League for Bayern Munich this season, as they already sit top of the standings with six points from their opening two matches. However, the German champions will be looking to stretch their advantage on Tuesday, as they come up against the side that are currently sitting two points behind them in the standings.
Galatasaray will likely have mixed feelings surrounding how they have opened their Champions League campaign, as they were held to a disappointing home draw on matchday one against Copenhagen before bouncing back to winning ways with a stunning victory away from home against Manchester United in the previous round of matches.
The Turkish side were excellent at Old Trafford in the previous round of matches, as they recorded a famous win against Premier League opposition. However, they haven’t recorded back-to-back wins in the Champions League since landing three wins on the bounce in December 2012. Meanwhile, they haven’t recorded a home win in the Champions League since September 2018.
Bayern Munich have made a typical start to the Champions League this term, and they are looking to land three straight wins in their opening three matches for the fifth straight edition of the tournament. Furthermore, they have landed victories in each of their previous seven matches in the group stage in the Champions League, and are without a loss in 18 matches on the road at this stage of the competition.
This will be the first meeting between Bayern and Galatasaray since the sides played in the first round of the European Cup in 1972-73. On that occasion, Galatasaray landed a 1-1 draw in the first meeting, before later losing 6-0 in the return fixture in Bavaria.
Bayern Munich’s record in the group stage of the Champions League is sensational. It appears challenging to overlook that trend this week, and we could see the reigning German champions landing a sixth straight victory against Turkish opposition to extend their advantage at the top of the group standings.
