Top comes up above bottom in the Europa League on Thursday, as Freiburg host Olympiacos in Group G. The home side are already through to the next round of the competition, while a point would be enough to secure their spot at the top of the standings.
Freiburg has enjoyed an excellent run in the Europa League this term, and they will be looking to maintain that momentum on Thursday evening with a fifth straight victory. They have been very impressive throughout the group stage this term, as they have won all four games that they have played, and have scored an incredible eleven goals. Furthermore, they have allowed just one goal to this point.
The German side are already through to the next round of the competition with two games to spare, and they could wrap up top spot this week with just a point. Freiburg produced possibly their best performance of the group stage in their previous fixture, as they hammered Nantes 4-0 away from home. Lukas Kubler opened the scoring, before further goals were added in the second half by Michael Gregoritsch and Jeong Woo-Yeong.
It has been a very disappointing European campaign for Olympiacos, as they are already eliminated from contention with two games remaining. They currently sit bottom of the standings, as they have picked up just a single point from a possible 12 available. They have scored just one goal and allowed eight in the four fixtures that they have played.
However, they do come into this fixture after a decent result in their previous fixture, as they managed to claim a 0-0 draw away from home against Qarabag. But, it remains to be seen whether they have the talent in the final third to pose questions of Freiburg.
The only previous meeting between these two sides came on matchday two, with Freiburg running out comfortable 3-0 winners on the road. Olympiacos also has a very poor record against German opposition, as they have lost their previous ten.
Based on the showings of both of these teams in the Europa League this season, it looks incredibly hard to see past a home win on Thursday. Freiburg should have far too much quality, and we could see the German side picking up a resounding 3-0 win.
