Freiburg’s attention switches back to the Bundesliga this weekend, as they look to move into the Champions League places. It has already been a famous week for the hosts, as they reached the final of the DFB Pokal for the first time in their history.
It could be an historic end to the 2021-22 season for Freiburg, as they have the chance to win a first major honour. However, they could also achieve a very unlikely feat and finish in a Champions League place for the first time in their history.
They have a very good chance of achieving that feat, as they currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga standings, and are just a point behind Bayer Leverkusen. The form is certainly with Freiburg at this late stage of the campaign, as they have won each of their previous two games in the Bundesliga.
They have also lost the joint-second fewest games in the German top-flight this season. Their latest win in the league came against Bochum, as Roland Sallai scored twice in the 3-0 home victory last weekend.
It has been a season to forget for Borussia Monchengladbach, as they have been fighting at the wrong end of the Bundesliga standings throughout the season. They still sit in the bottom half of the standings at this stage of the campaign, as they have lost 13 of the 30 games that they have played in the German top-flight.
Their recent form has shown significant improvement though, as they have lost just once in their previous five, and have picked up three victories during that run. However, their resurgence was swiftly stopped last weekend, as they were beaten 3-1 at home by Köln. Breel Embolo scored a late consolation goal for Gladbach in the defeat.
Freiburg won the previous meeting between the sides in emphatic fashion, as they won 6-0 away from home. That was their second victory in their previous four against Gladbach, with their previous win being a 1-0 home success in June 2020.
It could be a famous end to the season for Freiburg, as they target cup success as well as a finish in a Champions League place. I expect them to take the victory this weekend against a struggling Gladbach side, as the feel-good atmosphere continues at the Europa-Park Stadion.
