Freiburg have been one of the surprise packages in the Bundesliga this season, and could move above Borussia Dortmund in the standings this weekend if they can claim maximum points against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Very few people could have foreseen the start to the season that Freiburg have made this season, as they have caught many of the European hopefuls off guard by storming into third place in the standings. The games over the winter period will be crucial to their chances of finishing in a European place this season, but given how they have started, they could stand a good chance.
Freiburg suffered their first defeat of the season before the international break. They were the only remaining side in the Bundesliga that hadn’t lost this season. Freiburg currently have 22 points, which gives them a four point advantage in the race for Champions League places.
However, a victory on Sunday could see them overtake Dortmund and rise to second in the league standings. Draws have been a slight issue for them to this point, as they have been held on four occasions. However, a record of three wins in five certainly gives them an outstanding chance on Sunday.
Eintracht Frankfurt would have been one of the sides that would have been hoping to lay down a challenge for the European places in Germany. There is still a long way to go this season, but the start that they have made has been largely underwhelming.
Frankfurt are just three points above the relegation playoff spot at present, but victory this weekend could see them end the round as high as tenth in the standings. Their recent form has been slightly better, as they are unbeaten in two coming into this match. They also picked up just a second win of the season last time out, as they beat Furth 2-1.
Two of the last three meetings between the sides have ended in draws. The first of those came in May 2020, as the clubs played out a 3-3 draw. The first of the two meetings last season ended 2-2. However, Frankfurt won the fixture between the two towards the end of the season 3-1.
Frankfurt certainly have quality in their squad, but they aren’t showing it at this early stage of the season. It’s hard to see past the hosts taking the points from the fixture based on the form of both sides this season.
