Interesting action will take place in the Bundesliga on Sunday, as the race for European spots will see two direct rivals collide. Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt both come into this round of matches in poor form, but something will need to give on Sunday.
Sixth will come up against seventh in the Bundesliga standings this weekend, with Freiburg desperately chasing maximum points to close the gap on Frankfurt to a point. However, the home side have found victories hard to come by in recent weeks after losing three on the bounce in the German top-flight. That form has seen them drop down the standings, and they could now be vulnerable.
Freiburg started the season in excellent form, but a defeat on Sunday could see them overtaken by a number of sides sitting below them at this stage. A response will be expected by the home team this weekend, as they didn’t put up much of a fight in their previous match against Borussia Dortmund when being brushed aside on the road.
Frankfurt holds the four-point advantage over their rivals coming into this round, but a return to winning ways will be required if they are to mount a challenge for a Champions League spot. At present, they sit eight points off the top four spots in the league standings, and they have won once across their last four.
The German side played out a 1-1 draw in their most recent match against Bochum. Omar Marmoush opened the scoring in that clash in front of their own fans, but that would be one of just two shots on target that Frankfurt managed in 90 minutes against their rivals.
Frankfurt have avoided defeat in all but one of their last eight league showdowns against Freiburg. Their only defeat against their rivals was recorded in April 2022. Since then, Frankfurt have gone three without loss against Freiburg. However, two matches over that period have ended in draws.
There isn’t much to split these sides based on the stats in the German top-flight this term. The head-to-head record also indicates that draws have been a regular outcome when they have collided, with a 0-0 draw being played out earlier this season. A tie could be the standout selection once again on Sunday.
