Important action at the top of the Bundesliga standings will take place on Friday evening, as Bayern Munich look to cut away at Bayer Leverkusen’s advantage at the summit. Only a win will do for the defending German champions on the road against Freiburg this weekend.
It has been far from a perfect campaign to this point for Bayern Munich, and the pressure on the shoulders of Thomas Tuchel is already overwhelming. The German giants remain second in the current standings, and they have an eight-point difference to make up on Leverkusen if they are to end the season as the champions of Germany once again.
An important victory was achieved by Bayern last weekend, as they ended a three-game losing sequence across all competitions with a dramatic late win at home against RB Leipzig. Not for the first time this season, Harry Kane was the difference maker in that fixture, as the striker netted both goals in the success at the Allianz Arena, which included the winner in the first minute of injury time.
Freiburg will have the home field advantage this weekend, as the German side look to get their campaign back on track. They still sit in the top half of the standings, but they have suffered defeats in four of their last five matches in the competition. Despite that, a win on Friday could leave them just two points off the top six.
Freiburg suffered a tenth defeat of the season last weekend after losing against Augsburg away from home. The German side conceded twice in the final 20 minutes of that match, but they arguably deserved a point after defending well throughout the encounter.
Bayern have recorded victories in each of their last five league matches against Freiburg in the Bundesliga. That includes a 3-0 success in the reverse fixture this term. Freiburg’s last league win over Bayern was achieved in May 2015, but they did land a DFB Pokal success against their rivals in April 2023.
Bayern were slightly fortunate to get over the line against Leipzig last weekend, but a victory should breath new confidence into their title bid. This appears a slightly more straightforward assignment, and they should have no issues gaining maximum points.
