The action in Group F at the Women’s World Cup gets underway on Sunday, with France clashing with Jamaica at Sydney Football Stadium. France has often been a nation that has flattered to deceive at competitive tournaments, as they boast one of the most talented squads but as yet haven’t been able to transfer that to wins. The pressure was on the French at the World Cup four years ago, as they had hosting responsibilities, but they crashed out at the quarterfinal stage.
However, their results this year have picked up, and they could be hitting form at the right time. France suffered a rare loss in their previous international match, as they were beaten 1-0 by Australia. However, that loss ended a seven match winning streak, which included victories against Canada, Denmark, and Norway.
Jamaica will be competing in their second World Cup this summer, and they will be looking for an improvement in 2023 after failing to pick up a single point at the tournament in 2019. Across three matches, they conceded 12 goals, and scored just once. However, there has certainly been improvement from the team, as they finished in third place at the CONCACAF Women’s Championship last summer.
But, Jamaica comes into the World Cup in poor form this year. They have registered just two wins from eight international matches. Their most recent win was secured against Morocco, but they have lost against more competitive nations such as Mexico, El Salvador, and Australia in 2023.
This will be a first meeting between France and Jamaica. The French has won two and lost two from their previous four against nations from the CONCACAF region at the World Cup.
There will be pressure on France to get their campaign off to the best possible start. It should be a tricky assignment against Jamaica, but we fully expect the European nation to safely secure maximum points with a 3-0 win.
