It has been an excellent second half of the season to this point for Fiorentina, and they could yet end the campaign with a major piece of silverware. The Italian giants come into this second leg against Lech Poznan holding a solid 4-1 advantage.
It has been a long time since Fiorentina got their hands on a major piece of silverware, with their latest success coming in the form of Coppa Italia glory in 2001. You have to go back to 1961 for their last European honour, as they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup. But, they could stand an excellent chance of ending that long wait this season in the Europa Conference League.
Fiorentina was excellent in the first meeting between these sides last week, as they registered a huge 4-1 win on the road. Arthur Cabral gave the team from Florence the perfect start, as he found the net after just four minutes. Kristoffer Velde dragged the hosts level, but Fiorentina went back into the lead before the breakthrough Nicolas Gonzalez.
Fiorentina extended their advantage in the second period, with Giacomo Bonaventura scoring the third goal after 58 minutes, before Jonathan Ikone added the fourth goal just five minutes later. It could have been a wider winning margin, as Fiorentina registered 21 shots in total in the first leg.
This is a huge challenge for the Polish side this week, as they will need to play out of their skins to get back into the game. It appears incredibly unlikely that they will record a 3-0 win, which will force extra time. But, if they can net the opening goal in Italy, they could at least cause a slight scare.
This will be the second time that Poznan and Fiorentina have clashed in European competition. The first meeting came last Thursday, with Fiorentina landing a huge 4-1 win on the road.
Fiorentina’s spot in the semi-finals of the competition already looks assured following their huge win last Thursday. We expect them to claim another straightforward win against Poznan when the Poles travel to Italy this week.
