One of the most open groups in the Europa League this term will reach its conclusion on Thursday. Just three points separate the teams sitting at either end of the standings coming into matchday six, with both Lazio and Feyenoord being aware that victory on Thursday will ensure their passage through to the next round.
Group F has been one of the most captivating groups in the Europa League this season, and we are still no nearer to finding out the two sides that will be playing in the knockout round. Coming into matchday six, Lazio remain the current leaders in the standings, but they are level on points with Sturm Graz, and they are just three clear of the bottom two teams in the standings.
The Italian side has won two from five games in the competition this season, which includes a vitally important success in their previous fixture against Midtjylland. That was a huge fixture for both sides in the context of this group, but Lazio showed all their character to battle back from 1-0 down to claim a 2-1 victory. The winning goal was scored before the hour mark by Pedro.
Feyenoord are one of the teams sitting in the bottom two places that could yet qualify for the next round of the competition. The Dutch side has picked up just one win from the five games that they have played to this point, but they are the highest scorers in Group F with 12 goals.
Feyenoord had a glorious chance to go into one of the top two positions in their previous fixture, but they could only play out a 1-0 defeat on the road against Sturm Graz. They had more than their fair share of chances in that game, but they couldn’t find a way through.
The previous meeting between the sides on matchday one was the third time that these two sides had clashed. However, it was the first time that Lazio had claimed victory in the fixture. The Italian side should feel confident coming into this fixture, as they are unbeaten in their previous four matches against teams from the Netherlands.
Lazio’s record against Dutch opposition is incredibly strong, and they looked to have the better quality in the previous meeting between the sides. Therefore, we could see the visiting side taking the points once again this week.
