It has been a very tight campaign in Group D of the Europa Conference League, and all four teams in competition could yet reach the next round of the tournament. Two of those sides will meet on the final matchday, with FC Köln hosting Nice.
It has been a very entertaining group of action in Group D of the Europa Conference League, and coming into matchday six, all four teams can still qualify. It only makes things even more interesting that the two favourites for progression when the draw was made will meet on the final matchday, which means one of them could easily be exiting the competition at the first hurdle.
Nice has the added benefit of sitting top of the group standings coming into the final round of fixtures, as they have won twice from five games this season. However, crucially, they have suffered just one previous defeat. Nice were professional winners in their previous fixture, as they picked up a 2-1 home win against Partizan. That was a crucial fixture towards their chances of progression, with Mario Lemina scoring the winning goal with just 13 minutes remaining.
FC Köln remain in a very prominent position in the group standings, as they could seal their progression through to the next round of the competition with victory on Thursday. They bounced back from back-to-back defeats in their previous fixture in fine fashion last time out, as they recorded a win against Slovacko.
It wasn’t the most straightforward game on the road for them, as they needed to wait until the final ten minutes to claim victory. The only goal of the game was scored from the penalty spot by Ondrej Duda.
This is a repeat of the opening match from Group D in the Europa Conference League this term. On that occasion, the points were shared, as the sides played out a 1-1 draw. The scoring was opened by Steffen Tigges, but Nice equalised from the spot with just under half an hour remaining.
This should be a tight fixture between two of the more talented sides in this group. However, neither will be looking to give too much away on Thursday. Therefore, the most likely result may be a draw, just as it was on matchday one.
