Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to avenge a humbling defeat last weekend when they travel to FC Köln this weekend in the Bundesliga.
Despite a 5-1 hammering at the hands of Bayern Munich last weekend, Bayer Leverkusen remain in a strong position to challenge for Champions League football this season. They will face a difficult challenge this weekend, as they come up against a Köln side that have looked much better than in 2020-21.
It was a very disappointing return to Bundesliga action for Leverkusen last weekend, as they were on the receiving end of a drubbing from Bayern Munich. Leverkusen found the German leaders in dominant form, which meant that they were at the top of their game and would have made life very difficult for whatever team they would have come up against.
Bayern led 5-0 at the break, but Leverkusen at least got a foothold in the second period. Gerardo Seoane could have at least taken the small victory of his side winning the second half, as Patrik Schick scored the only goal in the second period.
FC Köln’s season last term was all about staying in the Bundesliga, but this season, they may feel like they could kick on and challenge for a Europa League place. They will need to maintain their form to put down any kind of challenge, as they have started this season in decent form, losing just twice in eight games.
They will need to recover from a recent setback this weekend, as they were beaten on their return to Bundesliga action against Hoffenheim last weekend. That was a disappointing afternoon for Köln, as they had no answer for the hosts, losing 5-0 and failing to register a single shot on target.
Leverkusen have a winning record against Köln, as they have picked up wins in the last three meetings. They have scored at least three goals in all of those wins, winning 4-0 away from home and 3-0 in their home fixture last season. Köln’s last two wins in this fixture have come in home games.
It will be interesting to see which of these sides respond better after both falling to heavy defeats last weekend. It would be hard to write off Leverkusen, who look well-placed to respond.
