Europa Conference League qualifying action takes place on Thursday, as FC Köln look to take a first leg lead against Fehervar. The German side will be the clear favourites to progress in the tie, and their form at the start of the new Bundesliga season has been very strong.
FC Köln will be looking to reach the group stages of a European competition for the first time since the 2017-18 season. They last competed in the Europa League during that campaign, but their record of four defeats from six games meant that they crashed out, finishing third in the overall standings.
This will also be the first time that they have played in the Europa Conference League. They should come into the fixture in good confidence, as they have started the new Bundesliga season in fine form. Köln are unbeaten in the two games that they have played, and they currently sit fourth in the league standings at this early stage. In their previous fixture, they came back from 2-1 down against RB Leipzig to rescue a point.
Fehervar have already managed to improve on their showing in this competition last season, as they crashed out in the first qualifying round 12 months ago. They have looked much stronger this term, as they reached the third qualifying round following a 5-3 aggregate success against Gabala.
They produced one of their finest displays in recent memory in Europe last time out in the third qualifying round, as they recorded a massive 5-0 success at home against Petroclub Hincesti. Fehervar completed the job in the second leg with a 2-1 success on the road. Budi Zivzivadze was the danger man in that recent win, as he scored both goals. However, they will need to bounce back to form after losing 4-0 against Ferencvaros at the weekend.
This will be a first competitive meeting between the two sides. However, Fehervar do have a solid record against teams from Germany, as they are unbeaten in two previous meetings.
While Fehervar has a strong record against clubs from Germany, it doesn’t look as though FC Köln will lose this fixture. They have already started the domestic campaign in strong form, and we could easily see them picking up a 3-0 home success on Thursday.
