Two sides that are on the cusp of challenging for a place in Germany’s European spots meet in the Bundesliga this weekend. However, both FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt will need to bounce back to form after enduring disappointing results over their previous five.
Cases can be made for both FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt when it comes to the shakeup for European places this season in the Bundesliga. However, both will need to get back to winning ways if they are to have the best possible chance of achieving that finish.
FC Köln are currently ahead in the standings, as they are eighth, just two points outside of the Champions League spots. Their position was looking much stronger just a couple of weeks ago, but they have lost their position in the top four after losing twice in their previous four fixtures. During that run, Köln have picked up just a single victory.
They were beaten for the second time in four games last time out. To make matters worse, they were beaten by a direct rival for Champions League qualification, as RB Leipzig claimed a 3-1 success at the Red Bull Arena. Tim Lemperle scored a late consolation for Köln.
Eintracht Frankfurt are back in tenth in the Bundesliga standings, but are just a point off their rivals this weekend. Frankfurt’s form over their last five has been much worse than many of their rivals, which has seen them drop into the bottom half of the standings.
They have won just once in their last five fixtures, and have been beaten on three occasions. However, the fact that they are just three points off the Champions League positions means that they have every chance of getting back in the hunt. But, a defeat this weekend could leave them with a mountain to climb.
Eintracht Frankfurt are unbeaten in four against FC Köln. However, they have won just once during that run of fixtures, with that victory coming in February 2021. The only win for Köln in the previous seven came in December 2019.
This is a Bundesliga fixture that could go in either direction this weekend. However, the most likely outcome is the draw, given that both sides will be looking to avoid defeat. A 1-1 draw is our pick.
