The competitive action in the Bundesliga continues this weekend, as Borussia Dortmund will be bidding to pick up a second straight victory. However, there will be pressure on FC Köln, as they chase a return to winning ways to aid their relegation battle.
Borussia Dortmund were one of the biggest winners in the round following the winter break in the Bundesliga. The German giants were one of just three sides in the top five to claim maximum points, with the two sides directly above them in the standings both falling to defeats.
Those results saw Dortmund cut the gap on the Champions League spots to three points, and they could move level on points with Leipzig this weekend if they are able to pick up maximum points. Dortmund comes into the round after losing just once in their last five, but last weekend’s win was their only success over the same period. Jadon Sancho made his second debut for the club last weekend, and registered an assist in the 3-0 success away from home against Darmstadt.
The pressure is increasing on FC Köln at this stage of the season, as they are in an intense battle for points at the wrong end of the standings. The German side have won just twice in the league all season, and they have suffered the second-most defeats in the competition this term. However, a victory this weekend could lift them out of the bottom two places.
However, victories have been hard to register for Köln throughout the season, and that has been evident over their last four matches. Over that period, they have suffered two defeats and they have played out two draws. Their most recent tie was picked up last weekend against Heidenheim.
Dortmund have picked up victories in each of their last two matches against Köln. However, they are without an away win against their rivals in three visits, with their most recent win on the road coming in August 2019.
Dortmund have found victories on the road against Köln hard to come by in recent seasons, and that could be a damaging trend this weekend. However, they appear too strong on paper, meaning that it is worth siding with Dortmund landing maximum points against Köln.
