The race for the Bundesliga title reaches its conclusion this weekend, as Bayern Munich must claim victory to stand any chance of landing the illustrious honour. However, FC Köln comes into their final match of the season in solid form, and could end the campaign in the top half.
Bayern Munich will be aware that they will be relying on favours from elsewhere if they are to end the campaign as the German champions. They come into the final round of matches sitting second in the standings, with Borussia Dortmund currently boasting a two-point advantage at the summit. Bayern’s defeat last weekend against RB Leipzig could ultimately cost them the title in Thomas Tuchel’s first season in charge.
Bayern only had themselves to blame against Leipzig last week, as they took an early lead through Serge Gnabry after just 25 minutes. However, they were made to pay for holding onto that advantage, with Leipzig scoring three inside the final half an hour. It has been a disappointing campaign overall for Bayern, but a trophy-less campaign is unlikely to go down well with the hierarchy.
FC Köln shouldn’t be underestimated this weekend, as they have been in excellent form in their own right. They come into the final weekend of the season looking to secure a finish in the top half of the standings, and they should be full of confidence after going three matches without a defeat in the Bundesliga.
A victory could see them end the campaign in ninth, but only if Mainz lose and there is a three-goal swing in their favour. Köln will be looking to bounce back from a draw in their previous match, as they played out a 1-1 tie against Werder Bremen away from home.
Bayern Munich has an excellent record against Köln, as they are unbeaten in 17 league matches against their rivals. They have also landed victories in nine of their last ten fixtures against Köln. However, the one exception to that rule did come in the previous encounter, as the sides played out a 1-1 draw in January.
Bayern Munich will need to keep Dortmund honest until the final kick on the last day, which means that they will need to do their job on the road against Köln. We find it challenging to overlook the visitors, as they boast an excellent record against their opponents this weekend.
