Everton’s European hopes are in tatters after defeat last weekend, but they could at least keep their outside chances of finishing in a Europa League place alive on Wednesday evening with a win against Wolves.
Premier League Preview
Just a couple of months ago, it would have seemed highly unlikely that Everton would be missing out on European football this season. However, their recent run of one win four league fixtures has been very damaging to their chances of playing in the Europa League. They have dropped down the league standings quickly, and could not be in a fight to finish in the top eight. Arsenal and Leeds United are both breathing down their necks, and the Gunners could overtake Everton this week. The Toffees suffered a humbling defeat in their last league fixture, as they were shockingly beaten at Goodison Park by already relegated Sheffield United. The travelling side defended well in that fixture, but the Toffees didn’t really do enough to try and get back into the game.
Wolves will also be looking for a response following their recent performance against Tottenham Hotspur. They failed to create a single goalscoring opportunity in that fixture, and eventually surrendered to a 2-0 defeat. Wolves have certainly missed Raul Jimenez throughout the season, but there are rumours that the Mexican could be back in contention for a start this week after being named in the national team squad for the upcoming fixtures. It would be a welcome sight for Wolves fans to see the Mexican play again before the end of the season. The upcoming summer is huge for Wolves, as they are in desperate need of strengthening in a number of positions. Still, they have managed to comfortably finish in the middle of the standings despite all their struggles this term.
Everton vs Wolves Head To Head
These two sides have been very evenly matched since Wolves returned to the top-flight. Both sides have won twice, while there have also been two draws. Everton won the most recent fixture between the sides, as they claimed a 2-1 win in January.
Everton vs Wolves Prediction
Both Wolves and Everton’s form has dipped over the past couple of weeks, which makes this fixtures a particularly difficult one to call. However, with the presence of fans back at Goodison on Wednesday, we expect the Toffees to give something for the home support to cheer about.
