Everton finally got off the mark for the new season last weekend, as they secured a dramatic win on the road against Brentford. They will be back at Goodison Park this weekend, as they welcome Luton Town, who are still searching for a first win of the season.
It had been a testing start to the season for Everton, as they had gone their opening five matches without picking up a victory. However, they finally got into the win column last weekend, as they picked up a morale-boosting 3-1 success away from home against Brentford.
The success has lifted the Toffees up to 15th in the standings, and they could move up to 12th if they are able to pick up maximum points this weekend. However, Everton have struggled for consistency since the start of last season, as they have picked up back-to-back wins on just one occasion. Meanwhile, Sean Dyche hasn’t led a side to consecutive wins since being in charge of Burnley in February 2022.
There were signs of improvement for Luton Town last weekend, as they finally picked up a first point of the new season against Wolves. However, they were hugely fortunate to gain the point, as their equalising goal was scored from the spot after dubious penalty was awarded.
Regardless, the Hatters have still gone five league matches without a defeat in the Premier League this term. In Football League history, they have only gone on longer winless streaks at the start of a new season on three previous occasions. Their most recent winless start saw them go nine without a victory in the 1974-75 season.
Bet hereLuton are without a win in their last six league matches against Everton. Over that period, the Toffees have won on three occasions, with the remaining three matches ending in draws. This will be the first meeting between the sides since Everton picked up a 1-0 win in the League Cup in October 2007.
Luton would have gained confidence after picking up a first point of the season last weekend, but this appears to be a challenging fixture on paper. The narrow preference is for Everton, but we struggle to see more than 2.5 goals being scored at Goodison Park.
