Erick Ouma Otieno has built a left-flank career on pure forward motion. From barefoot games in Kibera to European nights with Raków Częstochowa, he has turned pace, disciplined defending and fearless overlapping into his trademark. Born on 27 September 1996 and raised in Nairobi's Kibera neighbourhood, the left-footed, 170 cm left-back is currently sidelined at Raków Częstochowa, where he wears #26, valued at €1.0 million on Transfermarkt.  Today, Erick Ouma's sports career is a reference point for Kenyan full-backs. He is a dynamic left-back, national-team pillar, and one of the country's most valuable exports.    eouma snapshot

Early Life

Before European contracts and national-team caps, a young boy was learning timing, balance, and courage on rough pitches of Nairobi.

Childhood, Education & First Football Steps

Erick Marcelo Ouma was born on 27 September 1996 in Awasi, Kenya, but his story really begins in Kibera, where he spent nearly two decades and first played barefoot for local side Future FC/Future Stars at the DC and Woodley Grounds. Those endless dusty matches taught him coordination, agility and how to ride tackles without going down.  In Kibera, youth coach Benjamin Kipruto (“Kip”) worked with him at Future FC/Future Stars, helping turn raw street talent into a more disciplined left-back. Later, former Kenyan international Nicholas Muyoti recommended him to coach Brendan Mwinamo, who brought him to Kakamega High School on a football scholarship. That move let him mix study with football and learn tactical positioning, game rhythm and endurance over long tournaments.

Nickname “Marcelo” and Early Playing Style

The nickname “Marcelo” came from his idol, Brazilian left-back Marcelo. It was first coined at Kakamega High School, where coaches and teammates saw similarities early: attacking mindset, constant overlap, and a love for driving down the left flank, as later highlighted in profiles by Standard Media and Futaa. Even in school football, Ouma provided width and support, bombing forward then sprinting back into shape. That mix of street boldness and growing discipline laid the foundation for the attacking full-back fans see in Erick Ouma Marcelo’s profile today.

Club Career Journey

From Gor Mahia to Georgia, Sweden, and Poland, each of Erick Ouma’s transfers has been a step up in pressure and expectation.  eouma timeline

Breakthrough at Gor Mahia: Becoming a Fan Favourite

Ouma’s professional breakthrough came at Gor Mahia in 2016, when he arrived on a short deal, extended it, and played more than 20 KPL matches as the club chased titles. His performances that season earned him the 2016 KPL Young Player of the Year award, the accolade that first drew serious European interest.  At K’Ogalo, fans quickly fell for his pace, stamina, and aggressive overlapping runs down the flank. During his first season at Gor Mahia, Ouma became better at stretching defences, winning his duels and challenging cleanly, as well as maintaining consistency under intense pressure.

Move to Georgia (Kolkheti Poti) & Growth Abroad

In January 2017, Ouma moved to FC Kolkheti Poti in Georgia for his first European step, facing culture shock and three separate hamstring tears during 2017 that left him sidelined for months and, by his own account, close to quitting football.   That spell forced him to trust his recovery, improve his defensive anticipation and accept seasons where Erick Ouma's stats would not tell the full story. A subsequent move to KF Tirana in Albania — where he chose the country over an offer from Iranian club Pars Jam Bushehr — produced no appearances due to foreign-player quota restrictions, and he was loaned to KS Kastrioti Krujë without featuring competitively.

Swedish Rise at Vasalunds & AIK: Establishing Defensive Quality

His reset came in Sweden with Vasalunds IF in 2018, where regular minutes in Division 1 Norra (Sweden’s third tier) and a couple of goals rebuilt his confidence. Swedish football suited him: structured buildup patterns, organised transition and pressing refined his marking, as reflected in his Swedish spell on Transfermarkt.   In January 2020, he signed for AIK, one of Scandinavia’s giants, and across four seasons played over 100 matches in all competitions, with four goals and thirteen Allsvenskan assists that ranked him among the league’s more productive left-backs, as reflected in his AIK numbers on Soccerway and in a Pulse Sports deep dive. His spell also brought high-pressure Stockholm derby meetings with Djurgårdens IF, including a 2023 red card that led to a two‑match ban at a time of growing transfer interest.

Current Form, Key Matches & Career Highlights

In January 2024, Ouma joined Polish champions Raków Częstochowa on a three-year deal running to the end of 2026, with an option to extend, in a move reported at around €700,000 and including a sell-on clause for Vasalunds IF. He settled quickly, adding Ekstraklasa minutes and five UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying appearances as Raków pushed to secure UEFA Conference League football, before an Achilles injury ruled him out of the group stage. In January 2025, Kazakhstan’s FK Astana tabled a reported €1.7 million bid, which Raków rejected while holding out for €2.5 million, according to Pulse Sports. Through the Erick Marcelo Ouma Foundation (EMOF), he launched the EMOF Kenya Inter-High Schools Football Tournament. It’s a professionally run, knockout high-school showcase that gives students a bigger stage, turning his Kibera rise into a tangible opportunity for the next generation of Kenyan footballers.

Kenya National Team Career

For Harambee Stars, Ouma is the reference point on the left. When he is fit, the shape and rhythm of that side usually runs through him.

Debut for Harambee Stars

Ouma made his senior debut for Kenya on 31 May 2016 in a 1–1 friendly draw against Sudan, and was thrown into big games fast. By AFCON 2019 in Egypt, he was starting all three Group C matches against Algeria, Tanzania and Senegal, facing the kind of top African attacks that would go on to contest the final.  Those first caps showed his confident positioning, good balance in one-v-one situations, and the pace to sprint back after joining attacks.

Major International Performances & Impact

At AFCON 2019 and in the AFCON 2025 and 2026 World Cup qualifying campaigns, Ouma handled tough wingers, shading space with good anticipation and well-timed interception work. On the break, he offered width, quick overlaps and dangerous crossing when Kenya attacked down his flank, even as Kenya ultimately missed AFCON 2025 — finishing third in Group J behind Cameroon and Zimbabwe — and fell short of qualification in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, setting up AFCON 2027 on home soil as his next major international target if fully fit. eouma milestone By 2025, his stats include around 50 caps for Kenya, most as a starter, plus countless recovery runs that never make the highlight reels.  eouma international

Leadership, Consistency & Defensive Stability

Within the Harambee Stars group, he is one of the experienced voices. He helps organise the back line, leads coordination on his side, and keeps the left flank in sync with midfield.  When Erick Ouma's games go well for Kenya, the pattern is familiar: disciplined shape, quick transition down his side, and steady defensive support whenever the team are under pressure.

Playing Style & Strengths

If you rewatch Kenya’s 3–2 win over Tanzania at AFCON 2019, you get a good snapshot of what Ouma offers. From the first minutes, he is high and wide on the left, sprinting beyond his winger, recycling possession when attacks slow down and then racing back to close space when Kenya loses the ball.

Pace, Crossing Ability & Overlapping Runs

His standout tool is pace, but it is the way he uses it that matters. He accelerates into space rather than into crowds, timing his overlaps to arrive just as midfielders lift their heads to look for an outlet. That movement stretches back lines and gives Kenya and his clubs an escape route when they are pressed. From those positions, he mixes low cut-backs, driven crosses and simple passes inside instead of hitting hopeful balls. He is comfortable carrying the ball on his left foot along the touchline, then shifting it just enough to open a lane into the box.

Defensive Intelligence, Tackling & Work Rate

Out of possession, he relies more on positioning and timing than on sliding tackles. He angles wingers towards the touchline, waits for their touches to get loose and then steps in firmly without diving in. Short bursts of acceleration help him recover when moves break down, and he is often the one sprinting back to cover the far post when crosses come in from the opposite flank. His work rate shows in long spells of defending: he will press high when the team needs to squeeze the pitch, then drop back quickly into the line, tracking runners and offering support to centre-backs.

Versatility: Left-Back, Wing-Back, Wide Midfielder

Versatility is valuable. He can play as a classic left-back, a wing-back in a back three, or a wide midfielder helping with buildup and defensive support. His short passing and vision link centre-backs and midfielders. That tactical flexibility, plus steady coordination with teammates, helps him fit different systems without losing team balance.  [banner_third][/banner_third]

Challenges & Setbacks

Behind the smooth game is a career shaped by hard setbacks that demanded real resilience.

Injuries & Recovery Periods

The first big blow came in Georgia, where a recurring hamstring problem made him briefly consider quitting. More recently, he suffered a serious Achilles tendon rupture at Raków in 2025, forcing surgery and months on the sidelines.  He has spoken about his rehab, targeting full recovery and a return to competitive action around March 2026. For now, patience and disciplined work define this chapter.

Competition for Starting Roles Abroad

At Vasalund, AIK, and Raków, nothing has been guaranteed. Every season has brought competition for his place.  That constant battle sharpens his consistency. Small decisions, when to hold the line, how to manage transition, when to join attacks, and keep him in his coaches’ plans.

Future Prospects

Even with injury setbacks, Erick Ouma Marcelo's latest news still lives in transfer talk and national-team projections.

Potential Transfers to Bigger European Clubs

Interest from bigger European clubs has surfaced more than once. There have been bids and reported offers from teams like FK Astana, with Raków holding out for higher fees.  If he returns to full fitness and form, another move to a larger league would not be a surprise.

Long-Term Role with the National Team

For Kenya, his long-term role is straightforward. When fit, he remains a first-choice left-back, offering defensive stability and attacking thrust down the flank.  As younger players arrive, Ouma can guide them, passing on the habits, work ethic, and game rhythm that took him from Kibera’s dusty pitches to European football.
