There’s always something special about mid-week Premier League fixtures that shocks us every time, and Wednesday night did not disappoint.
That’s right. It happened again. Poor Manchester United suffered yet another embarrassing defeat as bottom-half side Burnley beat them by two goals to none at Old Trafford.
“A disappointing night” for some, for others it was a great night of well-deserved triumph. Sean Dyche’s men were organized defensively and what they lacked in passing and possession, they made up in playing smart football. The two goals came from Chris Wood (39′) and Jay Rodriguez (56′) – and honestly: ???!
Is this the beginning of the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s era at the helm of Manchester United? The stats speak for themselves; since OGS was appointed permanent manager, the Red Devils have lost more Premier League games (12) than they have won (11).
We just shake our heads in silence.
West Ham traveled to King Power Stadium for their 4-1 thrashing by third-place Leicester City this Wednesday. The opener by Harvey Barnes (24′) gave the hosts the lead, followed by another in the last seconds of the first half.
The Hammers returned with determination, which drastically elevated when Mark Noble scored a penalty just five minutes into the second half. But it was shortlived. Leicester star Ayoze Perez concluded the dominant scoreline with a late double that deflated West Ham’s hopes for any breathing room above the relegation zone.
Leicester came off the pitch with sore hearts too, as they saw Jamie Vardy clutch the back of his leg with a suspected hamstring injury, which might see him sidelined for the next few weeks.
Spurs came out with three points after a difficult clash against last-place Norwich City in north London this Wednesday.
Both Tottenham and Norwich failed at finishing some magnificent chances (Son Heung-min, Eric Lamela, Ondrej Duda and Teemu Pukki all getting close), but alas, it wasn’t their night.
Dele Alli clinched the opener to mark Spurs’ first Premier League goal of 2020. Norwich City came back more relentless than ever and although they had some insane chances, their equalizer came from a penalty in minute 70. Then Spurs hero Son Heung-min took it home nine minutes later with an absolute stunner.
