There will be a huge derby in the Bundesliga to look ahead to this weekend, as Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz collide. The rivals find themselves at contrasting ends of the standings, and a victory for either could be huge in the context of achieving their targets.
It has been a reliable enough start to the Bundesliga season for Eintracht Frankfurt, but they will be aiming to kick on in the second half of the campaign. The German side comes into this showdown on Friday after going three without a defeat, winning two matches over that period. That run of form leaves Frankfurt sitting sixth in the standings, and they are seven points off the Champions League spots.
However, their two-game winning sequence was ended in their previous match, as they could only play out a draw against Darmstadt. Frankfurt raced into a 2-0 lead in that fixture following efforts from Niels Nkounkou and Ansgar Knauff. However, the hosts stole a point with virtually the last kick of the game in second half injury time.
There will also be pressure on Mainz this weekend, as the Bundesliga side comes into the round sitting in the relegation playoff spot. In fact, a defeat on Friday could see them drop into the automatic relegation places. Mainz have won just once all season, and they have played out draws in each of their last two.
Positives would have been taken from their most recent outing in the Bundesliga, as they showed great character to fight back to claim a tie against Wolfsburg. Silvan Widmer netted the equalising goal in front of their home fans, but the lack of wins on their record is becoming a considerable concern.
Mainz are without a win in their last seven league matches against Frankfurt. Over that period, the hosts have picked up three wins. However, three of the last four Bundesliga clashes between the rivals have ended in draws. That includes a 1-1 result in the first meeting this season.
There will be pressure on both of these sides this weekend, but it could be hard to overlook Frankfurt, who have won their last two home matches against Mainz. Therefore, we will be siding with the hosts claiming maximum points in the derby this weekend.
