It could be a testing Europa League campaign for Dundalk and Molde, but both sides will have their sights set on the second spot in Group B. This opening day meeting between the sides could be a big indicator to which of these sides will have the best chance of finishing second.
This will be the first time that Dundalk have competed in the Europa League since the 2016-17 season. On that occasion, they finished bottom of the group and managed just win during the group phase. There will be confidence that they can improve on that record in this season’s competition, but they will likely have to win this game to have any chance of progression.
Dundalk will have confidence coming into this fixture as they beat Derry City in their last league match. Sean Murray opened the scoring in that win, while Jordan Flores scored the second goal. Murray has been in excellent form in this competition to this point as he has already scored twice and registered one assist in the qualifying games. If he can transfer that form to the group stages, then they could have a chance.
Molde have been impressive throughout the season to this point, as they are already in second place in the Eliteserien. They have won their last two league games, which has helped them overcome the disappointment of losing their Champions League playoff fixture against Ferencvaros.
They have scored six goals in their last two games, with the most recent of their wins coming last Saturday against Bodo/Glimt. Magnus Wolff Elkrem was in excellent form in that match as he scored twice, while there was also a single goal apiece for Ohi Omoijuanfo and Eirik Hestad. Molde were last involved in this competition four years ago, where they reached the last 32 stage before being beaten by Sevilla.
This will be the first time that these two sides have played against each other. Dundalk’s last match against a side from Norway came in the 2017-18 Champions League qualification, where they lost to Rosenborg. Meanwhile, Molde have only played against an Irish team twice, where they won both fixtures.
Dundalk have done exceptionally well to reach this stage of the Europa League, but they will not have the quality to get past the group stages. Molde will get the win on opening night.
