Borussia Dortmund will have the opportunity to move to the top of the Bundesliga standings on Friday, as they host Werder Bremen. A victory for the hosts will send them one point clear at the summit before their rivals have the opportunity to respond.
It hasn’t been the perfect start to the new season for Borussia Dortmund, but they remain within touching distance of the sides at the top of the Bundesliga standings. Dortmund are one of just three teams in the German division that are yet to suffer a defeat this term, and they could move to the top of the league standings with victory on Friday.
Dortmund’s recent form has been extremely encouraging, as they have landed victories in each of their previous four matches. The German side were excellent in their most recent match before the international break, as they came back from 2-1 down against Union Berlin to register a 4-2 success. Julian Brandt and Julian Ryerson scored the crucial goals in the second period to earn maximum points.
Werder Bremen will be the visitors to Dortmund on Friday, as they bid to end a two-match losing run in the Bundesliga. That run of form has seen them drop toward the relegation places in the table, but they could move up to tenth if they are able to pick up a famous win over Dortmund on Friday.
However, a response will be needed from Werder, as they were extremely poor defensively before the international break, suffering a 3-2 home loss against Hoffenheim. Werder looked to have done enough to secure a point after Jens Stage’s 91st minute equaliser, but they conceded the winning goal just 60 seconds later.
Dortmund boasts a very reliable record in this fixture, as they have landed victories in four of their last five against Werder. However, the one blip on that record did come in this exact fixture last season, as Bremen scored a shock 3-2 win on the road against their rivals in August 2022.
Werder’s win last term was a huge shock result against Dortmund. However, their defending over the opening months has been very questionable, and that’s a clear concern this weekend. Therefore, the preference is for Dortmund to land maximum points on their return to action.
