Much of the talk around Borussia Dortmund has been centring around factors off the field this week, but they will be able to get back to business on the pitch this weekend when they welcome Freiburg.
It has once again been another week full of transfer speculation at Borussia Dortmund, as they have reportedly rejected an offer in the region of £90 million from Manchester United for Jadon Sancho. The long-running transfer saga shows no sign of stopping, and there has been no word yet whether the Red Devils will return with another bid. Shortly after the news broke, it was revealed that Sancho wouldn’t be travelling with Dortmund for the Super Cup final against Bayern Munich, and it hasn’t been confirmed whether he will be back in the squad for their fixture against Freiburg this weekend.
Dortmund will be looking to get back to winning ways in the league this weekend, as they were beaten in their recent fixture against Augsburg. Dortmund boasted 80% of the possession in that fixture, but goals from Felix Uduokhai and Daniel Callgiuri proved to be enough to inflict a first defeat of the new season onto Dortmund.
Freiburg remain one of just six teams that have started the new Bundesliga season with an undefeated record. They won on the opening day, but swiftly followed that up with a first draw of the new season against Wolfsburg. Freiburg were threatening throughout this fixture, as they had 19 shots, which was double the amount recorded by Wolfsburg. They took the lead after eleven minutes through Nils Petersen. However, Wolfsburg levelled the scored three minutes before the break. Freiburg will be hoping to avoid defeat this weekend, as they look to continue their progressive start to the new season.
Freiburg’s only win against Dortmund came ten years ago, when they won 3-1. However, since then, Dortmund have won 15 of the 18 meetings. They won the most recent fixture between the sides 1-0. The only goal of the game on that occasion was scored by Jadon Sancho
It has been an indifferent start to the new season for Dortmund, but if they have any hope of winning the league title, then they will not be able to lose two games in a row this early in the campaign. Therefore, the pick is for Dortmund.
