Once again, Borussia Dortmund look set to be the closest rivals to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, but they will need to maintain their form if they are to have any chance of winning the league. They face an FC Köln side this weekend that have been very difficult to beat this term.
Borussia Dortmund have started the Bundesliga season in fine form, and currently sit second in the standings after nine rounds of fixtures. Their recent form in the league has been very good, as they have won four of their last five. However, the one blip that they did have came in a 4-0 drubbing against Ajax.
Since that big defeat in the Champions League, Dortmund have won their last two in all competitions. The absence of Erling Haaland through injury could be a big blow for the side from Signal Iduna Park over the coming months, but Jude Bellingham has more than stood up and played his part.
The England international scored a stunning goal in Saturday’s 3-1 win away from home against Arminia. Dortmund made it through to the third round of the DFB-Pokal in midweek, beating Ingolstadt 2-0 at home.
FC Köln have been one of the most difficult teams to beat in the Bundesliga this season, as they have lost just twice. Only Freiburg, Bayern Munich and Union Berlin have lost fewer games in the German top-flight.
However, recent form may be a slight issue, as they have won just once in their last three. They picked up a draw in their last Bundesliga fixture, but did claim a commanding 2-0 win over Stuttgart in the second round of the DFB-Pokal in midweek, with Anthony Modeste scoring a brace.
FC Köln experienced success in this fixture last season, as they took four points from the games that they played against Dortmund. They beat Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park 2-1 in November, before claiming a 2-2 draw in the return game in Köln. The win in November ended a four-match winning run for Dortmund in this fixture.
Borussia Dortmund are certainly having to play differently without Haaland, but the form of Bellingham is ensuring that they aren’t missing the Norwegian just yet. However, this is a slightly more difficult nut to crack, and we could foresee Köln taking a point on the road.
