It promises to be a fascinating battle for qualification in Group D, with three of the four teams involved ranked inside the top 20. China and Denmark will meet in an important opening match in Perth on Saturday, with both sides desperate to get off to a winning start.
This will be a huge match in Group D for both China and Denmark, as both sides chances of progression could be negatively impacted if they aren’t able to pick up maximum points. Denmark could be one of the live dark horses in the competition this year, as they cruised toward qualification after winning all eight matches. That was a stark improvement compared to their previous record in qualifying, as they had won just 16 from 32 before the previous qualifying round.
Their form since achieving qualification has also been impressive, as they have won four of their last five internationals. The only defeat that they have suffered over that period was a 2-0 home loss against Spain. However, wins over Norway, Sweden, and Japan highlight just how seriously they should be taken in Group D.
China has an excellent record at the World Cup, as they have made it through the group stage on all six occasions in which they have reached the major tournament. However, they were slightly below their best in 2019, as they exited the World Cup in the round of 16 stage after winning just one of their four matches.
Their record this year has also been slightly inconsistent, as China has won just twice in eight matches. Both victories that they recorded came against Russia in early July. Since then, they were easily beaten 3-0 by Brazil, and held to a 2-2 draw against Colombia.
Denmark has faced China more frequently than any other nation at the World Cup. However, the European nation is yet to record a victory against China, as they have lost twice and been held to one draw. The most recent clash saw China land a 3-2 win at the 2007 competition.
This is a really interesting opening match in Group D, as both sides have the ability to go deep at the World Cup. However, the preference is for Denmark to continue their progression with a 2-0 win on matchday one.
