Questions are beginning to be asked of Bayer Leverkusen at this stage of the season, as the German side have seen their advantage at the summit cut to two points. However, they could bounce back to winning ways this weekend when they travel to Darmstadt.
Bayer Leverkusen has been one of the standout sides in Europe this term, and they are still the only side across the top five divisions that are yet to suffer a defeat. Xabi Alonso’s side dropped points in their previous match, which has enabled Bayern Munich to cut away at their advantage at the summit. However, there would be little surprise to see the away side bounce back this weekend.
Darmstadt will be the massive outsiders in the betting on Saturday, as they have recorded just two wins from their opening 19 matches this season. However, a victory could move them off the bottom of the standings. But, a survival bid appears unlikely at this stage, as they are six points from safety and they haven’t won in their last five matches.
Statistically, this is one of Darmstadt’s worst Bundesliga seasons in history, as they have collected just eleven points so far this term. They have only picked up fewer points in the top-flight on one previous occasion, as they were relegated in 2016-17. Meanwhile, they are on the longest winless sequence in the division after going 12 without a success.
Leverkusen have made winning matches a habit this term, as they have picked up 49 points from their matches. That is the fourth-best tally at this stage in history, and they remain unbeaten across all 28 competitive matches that they have played this term. They are within four matches of breaking Bayern’s long-standing unbeaten record across all competitions for a German side.
Darmstadt have struggled in matches against Leverkusen throughout history, losing six of their last seven. The reverse fixture between the sides this term saw Leverkusen land a dominant 5-1 win, which was also Darmstadt’s biggest ever defeat in this fixture.
There is a clear gulf in class between these two sides this season, and we fully expect Leverkusen to get their title challenge back on track. Bayer have won on their last three visits to Darmstadt, and a fourth straight win could be a formality this weekend.
